Applying Impregnation Sealers

How to guide for general application of impregnation sealers

Applying an impregnating sealer involves a few steps to ensure effective protection and sealing of the desired surface. Here are the quick steps to follow:

  1. Preparation: Clean the surface thoroughly by removing any dirt, dust, or stains. Use appropriate cleaners or degreasers if necessary. Allow the surface to dry completely before proceeding.

  2. Test the sealer: Before applying the impregnation to the entire surface, it is advisable to conduct a small test in an inconspicuous area. This helps ensure compatibility and desired results.

  3. Application: Read the manufacturer's instructions carefully and follow them. Wear appropriate protective gear such as gloves and goggles. Apply the impregnating sealer evenly using a brush, roller, or low pressure sprayer, depending on the type of impregnation and the surface area.

  4. Absorption time: Allow the impregnation to penetrate and absorb into the surface for the recommended duration. This time may vary depending on the specific impregnations and surface being treated. Avoid walking or touching the treated area during this period.

  5. Using the wet-on-wet method, apply another layer of the impregnation onto the already fresh coat of impregnation to ensure an even proper coating. This will process prevents the risk of pinholes appearing on the treated surface.

  6. Drying and curing: Allow the impregnation to dry completely as per the manufacturer's instructions. This may take several hours or even days depending on the sealer and environmental conditions. Avoid exposing the treated surface to moisture or foot traffic until fully cured.

Remember, it's important to carefully read and follow the instructions provided by the specific impregnating sealer manufacturer to achieve the best results.

If applied correctly and in the right conditions, an impregnation sealer can last from 10-15 years without having to appying another coat.
