Carbon and Rust Removal
This is a project that took place in 2023 that involved the cleaning of a church in Ireland using our chemical HD 400 & SC 100.
As pollutants containing carbon, such as soot and exhaust gases, come into contact with brick surfaces, the carbon particles settle and adhere to the porous structure of the bricks. Over time, this leads to the gradual buildup of a dark or black layer, affecting the appearance and potentially impacting the performance of the bricks. Proper cleaning and maintenance are essential to preserve the integrity and aesthetics of brick surfaces and mitigate the detrimental effects of carbon buildup.
Application method:
1. To pre-wet.
A cold-water jet is normally used and each square metre of surface washed and wetted for about 30 seconds after which a short time is allowed (5 – 10 minutes) for surface water to drain down. This jetting also removes dust and loose organic matter from the masonry face.
2. To degrease and prepare the surface for the acid cleaner. (HD 400)
Apply a heavy layer of the degreasing agent to the wall (HD 400) for the manufacturers recommended time frame (3-4 hours). It should nt be left on long enough to dry out. If the contact time is to be increase you must apply a heavy coating.
3. To power jet off the surface debris.
Wash off degreasing agent and extra debris. Inspect the surface and see if the you need an extra coat.
4. To clean using the appropriate acid-based product. (SC 100)
Frequently after degreasing the surface an acid (SC100) is used to give an enhanced clean and brighten the masonry to a sparkling new look.
See process below:
Apply the product by means of a fibre bristle brush working it into the masonry face and leaving a visible costing on the surface.
The product may be used as supplied on granites and sandstones but should be diluted at least 50/50 with water before use on brick or terracotta. When diluting SC-100 ensure that the proportions are not varied and that the container is well stirred. Work to distinct boundaries.
Normal contact times is generally 5 - 15 minutes but can be extended up to 30 minutes maximum.
It is preferable to repeat short contact treatments instead of using longer contact times, also frequently better degreasing treatments prior to using SC-100 greatly improve results.
5. To power jet off the surface debris.
Wash down area with water.
