NHL and Cork (ECOCORK LIME) Thermal Insulation Plaster
Wall coating is one of the ways to significantly increase the acoustic and thermal performance of building elements and this is achieved with the ECOCORK range.
Properties:
➢ Improved acoustic insulation
➢ Cork aggregates
➢ High compatibility with older substrates
➢ Superior workability
➢ Reduced self-weight
➢ Water vapour permeability
➢ Mortar for thermal insulation
➢ Indoor and outdoor application
More about Thermal Insulation Plaster - NHL and Cork
ECOCORK LIME plaster is a lightweight mortar formulated from cork aggregates and Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL) for plastering interior and exterior wall and ceiling surfaces.
The ECOCORK LIME system allows a fine sanded finish to be obtained using the Rehabilitate Cal AC product, completed with a silicate-based paint scheme
Like most Lime Renders and Plasters, apply only when the temperature is over 5°C and likely to rise. If using outside, be sure that the newly applied render is protected from all of the weather’s worst excesses such as rain, drying winds, strong sun and of course frost.
Application method:
Step 1:
Remove all old render or paint. Fix any problems you find, like replacing rotten wood beams, repairing cracks, and addressing any structural issues. Wooden beams can be reinforced and covered with haired lime mortar.
Step 2:
Fiberglass mesh can be used on areas where different materials meet or in spots that might crack due to movement. It can also be applied to the entire project if needed.
Step 3:
After making any necessary repairs, dampen the wall to control suction and ensure a good bond. Mix the Secil CAL CS mortar into a wet mixture suitable for hand application. For larger projects, use a rotary drum mixer and let it mix for at least 10 minutes. Transfer the mix into a bucket, add more water, and whisk with a plastering whisk or paddle. It's faster and creates a better bond if you apply it with a harling trowel. The scud coat bonds better to the surface than a drier scratch coat, controls suction, consolidates loose surfaces, and provides a good base for Secil EcoCORK. Don't use a tyrolean applicator, as it won't consolidate the mortar well. Aim for an average thickness of about 3mm.
Step 4:
After 24-48 hours, the scud coat should be ready for the EcoCORK. Apply 1 or 2 coats, each 10-20mm thick, depending on the required overall thickness. Place 3 x 14kg bags of EcoCORK into a mixer with water for at least 15 minutes, then transfer it into a wheelbarrow. Let it sit for about 1 hour. Whisk the EcoCORK for a couple of minutes right before applying it.
Step 5:
Bed the fiberglass mesh into the surface of the first coat at potential stress points, like where different materials meet. After another 24-48 hours, apply a second 10-20mm coat of EcoCORK if needed. The total thickness of all EcoCORK layers should not exceed 40mm. Float the final coat to compress the EcoCORK and create a surface texture suitable for the finishing coat.
Step 6:
After 3-4 days, once the EcoCORK has stiffened, apply a single 3mm coat of Secil CAL AC. Alternatively, you can apply two coats of 1.5mm each. Finish with a trowel and/or sponge to achieve the desired texture. For internal applications, you have extra options. For example, apply a first coat of Secil Finishing Mortar and lightly sponge it to create a textured surface suitable for a 'Setting Stuff' lime putty plaster finish, which can then be applied in the usual manner.
Step 7:
It's crucial to choose the right paint for decorating a solid wall building; it must be vapour permeable. Lime-wash can be applied in 4-5 coats, with at least one day between each coat, starting a week after rendering or plastering. Alternatively, the Earthborn Silicate Masonry paint system can be used, but only after allowing the render to cure for 30 days or more. For internal applications, there are many more paint options available, with Earthborn Clay Paint being the best choice.
